Antioxidant Effect of Alpha Lipoic Acid on Hepatotoxicity Induced by Aluminium Chloride in Rats

چکیده
The present study was planned to investigate the ameliorative effects of α-lipoic acid (α-LA) supplementation against aluminium chloride (AlCl3) induced hepatotoxicity in rats. The results showed that rats consuming diets with AlCl3 added had poor growth performance, and most serum hematological indexes were significantly altered compared to the control. Biochemical results showed that lipid peroxidation increased significantly in Al-treated rats, as evidenced by high liver malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. Alteration of the antioxidant system in treated group was confirmed by the significant decline of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities and reduced glutathione (GSH) content in liver. Moreover, AlCl3 exposure induced an increase in the activities of the aspartate transaminase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), lactate deshydrogenase (LDH) and bilirubin levels, while albumin and total protein were significantly decreased. These results strongly suggest that aluminium affected antioxidant defence system and both haematological and biochemical parameters, co-administration of α-lipoic acid exerted a protective effect against aluminium induced oxidative stress.

Introduction: Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder in which patients experience spontaneous recurrent seizures and deficiency in learning and memory. Although the most commonly recommended therapy is drug treatment, some patients do not achieve adequate control of their seizures on existing drugs. New medications with novel mechanisms of action are needed to help those patients whose sei...
متن کاملMelatonin and alpha lipoic acid as possible therapies for lopinavir/ritonavir-induced hepatotoxicity in albino rats
Introduction: The use of lopinavir/ritonavir (LPV/r) has decreased morbidity and mortality due to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV); however its use could be impaired by hepatotoxicity. Therefore, this study was designed to investigate the effects of melatonin (MT) and alpha lipoic acid (ALA) on LPV/r-induced hepatotoxicity in male albino rats. Methods: Rats were divided into groups and treate...

Protective efficacy of DL-alpha lipoic acid on adriamycin induced hepatotoxicity was evaluated in rats. Adriamycin toxicity, induced by a single injection (ip; 15 mg/kg body wt), was expressed by an elevation in alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase, bilirubin levels in serum and alkaline phosphatase, lactate dehydrogenase, alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase activity in hepatic...

Introduction: This study evaluated the effects of pretreatments with melatonin (MT), and Alpha Lipoic acid (ALA) on lopinavir/ritonavir (LPV/r) -induced serum levels of creatinine (Cr), urea (U), uric acid (Ua) and kidney levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH) and catalase (CAT) in male albino rats. Effects of treatments with MT and ALA were also evaluate...

Our study pertains to evaluate the protective effect of selenium (Se), used as a nutritional supplement, against aluminium chloride induced cardiotoxicity in rats. Rats have received during 21 days either AlCl3 (400 ppm) via drinking water, AlCl3 associated with Na2SeO3 (0.5 mg/kg of diet) or only Na2SeO3. Co-administration of Se to AlCl3 treated rats alleviated heart oxidative stress objectifi...
